The tasks focus on receptive skills - listening comprehension and reading comprehension and evaluate the ability to understand both spoken and written texts. The test also includes questions targeting vocabulary and grammar, as well as 'communicative' questions focused on language use.

The test consists of multiple-choice questions, where exactly one option is correct, and several open-ended tasks. Participants gain a point for every correct answer, but they lose a fraction of a point for an incorrect answer (with the exception of the open-ended tasks).

Unlike other tests within the NCE, the result for this test will be presented not only as a percentile but also as a point score, in order to determine whether the candidate's knowledge meets the required threshold for the B1/B2 level.
